Tina's RWC Puppet

Reflection of My Week

I feel very proud of my puppet. I have finished her face, and I just need to put the wool on for hair, and tie it up into a pony-tail.Then I will be able to work on the clothes! Next time I would like to maybe paint my face black and white, or draw a New Zealand flag onto the face. And maybe, I might give my puppet a flag or something to hold.

Cross Country Review

Ellishas Blog

       My Cross country run.

Bang!

“Mum! Mum!” I screamed in pain.

It was Thursday, I had just fallen off my bike and my foot was stuck under the handle bars. “Ouch.” My Mum came and she yelled for Dad to come and help. They carried me inside and put me on the couch. Mum grabbed some ice and l placed it on my foot. That night I had a bad sleep so in the morning I was really tired and I could hardly eat my breakfast without spilling the milk everywhere!  As I was having my breakfast I caught eye of the school news letter and as my eye went down the page I saw CROSS COUNTRY in big bold letters. ‘Oh no,’ I yelled, ‘because of my sprained ankle I can’t do the cross country tomorrow.’

I‘d been looking forward to running it all year so I said to myself ‘I’m going to try’.  So I rested my foot and made sure I went to bed early for a good night’s sleep so that I wouldn’t be tired for the big race. The next morning I was ready to go but my foot was no different. I hopped to school without my crutches. Everyone was wondering why I was walking on my foot but I told them they would soon find out.

“GO!” Mrs O’Hanlon shouted. I ran ahead and kept on going. It was really hard because I have asthma which is when you can’t breath properly. I ran and ran coughing and coughing but I knew soon it would all be over. I ran towards the the finish line and I came 4th and got a place in the inter school team. I was very proud of myself and even though my foot was sorer than before I’m glad I tried so hard. And I can do it all again when my foot gets better.

A Million Fireflies

Finally, the time has come for New Zealand to host the Rugby World Cup! Thousands of fans were on their way from all over Auckland to watch the opening ceremony at Eden Park. The Government only expected 50,000 people to watch the opening ceremony in town, but if you times that amount by four that was the actual number. 200,000 people turned up and if any more people had gone onto the wharf the Government thought it would CRASH and BREAK!

Sparkles filled the sky from 8pm on. A BAM went off here and a BAM went off there. What a magnificent sight. The sky lit up in sparks of colour. Our eyes were as wide as dinner plates for the full 11 minutes of amazement. It looked like a million fireflies bursting colour into the navy blue sky.

Probably everyone in Auckland who was in town was squashed against strangers who were trying to get a glimpse of the sparks.

Georgia was wearing some pretty cool sliver fern earrings, while Jude had her face painted with a sliver fern on her cheek and New Zealand ROCKS painted on her forehead. Jude was also wearing a New Zealand hat, shirt and pants.

After all the sparks and BAMS, began the game. New Zealand got into a head start of ten nil. But soon enough Tonga was in the game. Both teams did very well and it was a hard first game. Dan Carter scored the first points of the Rugby World Cup. After an exciting and nerve wracking hour and twenty minutes the score was 41-10 to New Zealand. We had won the match!

Opening Ceremony

On Friday night it was the opening ceremony for the Rugby World Cup. It was amazing with all the costumes and props even the singing was magnificent! The fireworks were squirting up all over the place, the sky was completely lit up and people swarmed in from everywhere. The wharf was packed with painted faces and even some dogs were dressed up!

But the best part was the special effects stage. All of the eyes were drawn to the stage, the big rugby ball shaped stage. It created pictures of volcanoes, the earth and the water. It showed how people believed New Zealand was discovered. Even the GREAT Jonah Lomu stared in the performance. During the performance a young boy wore a red and black rugby jersey to support Christchurch. The excitement built up as the ceremony linked onto the All Blacks vs Tonga game.

We think it is something New Zealand should be proud of. It kept us excited from the first minute to the last. Now we are looking forward to the rest of the World Cup

World Cup Game !!!!!!

South Africa versus Wales

Everyone had finished singing the peaceful national anthems ....and now the crowd has gone WILD waiting desperately for the rugby game to begin!!

Wales and South Africa are warming up for their battle to get through to the finals. The boys are tackling hard, running up straight to their opposition to get the ball and score a try!

Francois Steyn grabbed the ball off the ground and ran through all the hard tacklers from the Welsh team! He ran like the wind towards the try line..scoring the first try of the game for South Africa!!!!!!

Everybody’s eyes were on Morne Steyn. He was going to accomplish the conversion for his country. Then, there was silence all around. They were waiting for him to get the conversion over. “KICK” he kicked the ball and it flew into the sky like a cannon ball, through the goal posts landing onto the field. The crowd roared with excitement.

Eventually South Africa won by one point over the Welsh. The points were 17-16. It was such a close hard game it was very exciting to watch.

We think that the South Africans were more skilled than the Welsh and that they will make the finals. Maybe the All Blacks will beat the South African team but win or loose we are behind them all the way.

Rugby World Cup Opening Ceremony

Friday was a very proud and disappointing day for New Zealand. The Opening Ceremony was a blast! Many Maori NZ citizens performed hakas. I think we all enjoyed the big screen on the Eden Park field.

Suddenly many people in the stadium counted down the Opening Ceremony with their cellphones. When they counted they opened their cellphones, when it was a tiny break they quickly closed it and they repeated that pattern. When the Opening Ceremony started the big screen on the field was turned on and a Maori woman started a call.

My favourite part of the whole Ceremony was when Ethan Bai, a 13 year old kid, went onto the field and took on one hundred Gladiators!

Then he talked to All Black legend Jonah Lomu.

When the bright Fireworks started we were all starstruck! It was AMAZING! I loved the end especially because they just let out all the fireworks and it looked very special!

One disappointing thing was that the train transport was horrible and jammed so many people who bought tickets for the NZ vs Tonga match was late and some even MISSED OUT ON SEEING THE GAME!

Although that I bet that the whole of NZ was so honoured and proud to be an NZ citizen.

T.N.I.S

On Wednesday some of the year 6 people went to T.N.I.S to look around the school. Fortunately we were allowed to choose a partner. Unfortunately we were split into two groups and we could only do one thing. One group did cooking and one group worked on electrical torches. We were both in the electrical torch group.

first we were all given balloons. We blew them up and rubbed them on our head. After that we poked the balloons with a barbecue skewer dipped in detergent which made it harder to pop them.  Then we made a torch out of foam, LED, plastic glass and battery. We also had a tour around the school. After, we met some of the people who baked cookies, they were all holding a packet of cookies.

Puppets

This week we painted our puppets different colours to represent the world cup countries because we are making them fans at a rugby game. I painted my puppet white and black because I am supporting the All Blacks. I am going to put black and white clothes and stickers on his face. We had to paint the faces very carefully and not go over the pencil line we drew, so we didn’t get smudges on our faces.

Puppets

We are making puppets that look like fans at the Rugby World Cup. On Wednesday we painted our puppets. Some people painted their faces white and black to show that they are the All Blacks fans while other people are supporting South Africa, Canada, Japan and Tonga. Some people have already put their eyes on. The puppets are going to be awesome!

The Senior Syndicate are making puppets, a person in the crowd watching the Rugby World Cup. Room 11 people are mostly on to painting the faces. I can see that there are puppets sponsoring teams from some other countries. Most people painted their face to represent the All Blacks. Mine is sponsoring the All Blacks as well!

T.N.I.S

On Wednesday 7th the Year 6 children who are going to T.N.I.S in 2012 went there for a visit. I was so excited. I had a ride in a bus and sat on the chair. The bus arrived at T.N.I.S and Annie and I and other children went to a kitchen. The teacher talked and divided us half and half. One team went to the science room and another team didn't go. I was on the science team and we made torches.

Future Problem Solving

On Tuesday the 5 of September,

the Year 6 FPS group did an exam.

Our topic was Water Quality.

All students participated in groups of 4.

The test took 2 hours and it started at about 9 o’clock.

Everyone was very excited...but some were more

nervous than ever!!!

There are 6 stages.

The first step is challenges.

We identified problems from a futuristic scenario.

The second step is the U.P.

(U.P stands for Underlining Problems)

We wrote down the best problem.

The third step is solutions

We created our own futuristic solutions that help solve our U.P.

The fourth step is the criteria-Questions-

We wrote down 5 questions that are related to our U.P.

e.g. Which solution will be the easiest to manufacture?

The fifth step is applying the criteria.

We choose the 5 best solutions and grade them from 1 (worst) - 5(best) and we added up the total. The one with the most points is our group’s solution to our problem.

The sixth step is the Action Plan.

For our Action Plan we wrote down who will provide the product, when it will help us, where it will take place and how it will solve the problem.

At last we were finished!!!!!

Our papers got taken to the office in Orewa on Wednesday, to be marked by judges.

The judges get 1 group of papers from each school,

when the papers get sent back we can check the comments and feedback , we also get marked from 3 or 7 groups (the best group gets marked a 1).

It would be great if one of Sunnybrae’s FPS groups got in the finals.

    SPORTS EXCHANGE

Last week  Rooms 11, 12 and 13 had a sports exchange with St Marys School. Tapuae, netball, ripper rugby and soccer were the four different games you could choose from. The tapuae and soccer teams stayed and played at Sunnybrae, the netball teams went to the AMI Netball Center and the rugby teams went to Onewa fields. It was it was a beautiful sunny day and while I was playing netball I was dripping with sweat and thirsty all the time. Luckily I had a water bottle with me because I really needed it!

My team lost two games and  won one game. I would like to do it again sometime!

Sports Exchange

Sports Exchange

On Friday we had our sports exchange.

I played rippa rugby.

I think lots of people were hogging the ball and not passing, so thats probably why we lost both of our games. But its not all about winning, it’s about having fun.

Jayden got a blood nose and had to go back to school in a car.

David and Jayden were the try scorers.

Next time I would like a bigger field because people were running out of the boundary.

I think that having fun is important, more important than winning.

By Liam Greenacre

Sports Exchange

On Friday we had our sports exchange.

I played rippa.

A sports exchange is a time where we meet up with another school and play sport.

There were four different sports, taupae, soccer, rippa rugby and netball. I think that it’s not important that we win or lose, having fun is the most important thing overall. I think we all had fun no matter what sport we played. Fair play is important too. It felt good when I got the rugby ball I ran as fast as I could and tried to get a try or ripping a rip off an opponent. In my opinion it doesn't matter what sport we play, its either sport or no sport.

Sports Exchange

Last Friday Sunnybrae had a sports exchange with St Marys Primary School.

It was a hot sunny summery afternoon when we started walking down to Onewa. There were four different sports we could choose from soccer, netball, rippa and tapuae. I chose netball. Most of us were in the same teams for netball as on a Wednesday night. Soccer and tapuae stayed at Sunnybrae, while netball and rippa went down to Onewa. Luckily it wasn’t muddy on the fields. St Marys teams were quite good at netball. We only won two out of our three games. Some of our girls were being a bit silly fighting over their positions.

Overall I think everyone had fun and worked together as a team.

National Young Leaders Day

A couple of months ago I was one of the fortunate pupils from Sunnybrae who attended the Young Leaders Day. This is where celebrities speak about their life journey and how they got where they are today. Everyone had different experiences and they all gave us useful advice. Pat inspired me the most because he said, “Life is your journey and YOU create your own future”. Think before you act, or speak and before making choices. Keep life simple.

It was a fabulous experience. From these successful people I have gained the confidence to believe in myself and to be a leader. Good ideas don’t work until we do.

FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS!

Festival Choir

Every Wednesday morning we have Festival Choir at eight fifteen down in the music room.We are learning many different songs. Some are high, some are low, some are frightening and some are so joyful that it makes a tear trickle down my cheek. Most of the songs I know the words to but a few are hard because I can’t articulate the words properly. Mrs Stewart said last year I wasn’t singing right up to my ability so  practised and practised and this year I am ROCKING! Wish us luck for the APPA Festival Choir!

Sports Exchange

Last Friday the 26 August Sunnybrae Normal School had a sports exchange with St Mary’s School. We could either play netball, soccer, rippa or tapuae. I decided to play netball. The rippa and netball people walked down to the courts and fields at Onewa. The tapuae and soccer people stayed at Sunnybrae. For netball there were three teams. My friends and I were in team one which mostly had the people who play netball on a Wednesday night. Our team won two out of three games. I played GS,GK and GA a different position for every game. St Mary’s had lots of strong teams. I enjoyed playing netball because it was fun. This year I don’t play netball for the school, so it’s a good time to play again and remember the game. Over all It was a nice afternoon.I enjoyed being outside getting fresh air and giving people a time to show their strengths.

Museum Trip

Museum Trip

Two days ago Rooms 11,12 and 13 went to the Auckland Museum. We went to learn more about our topic this term - Earth Forces. When we got there we had morning tea, then put our bags into cages so we didn’t have to carry them around the museum. The gallery that we stayed in the most was the Volcano gallery because we had to find the answers to a really long quiz about volcanoes. The gallery we found most interesting was the Weird and Wonderful one because there were dead things everywhere and also some glass boxes that were filled with insects. The most creepy thing was the Egyptian gallery because it had a mummy in a glass cage.

Reflections

My reflection of the week is that when I did my speech for the first time I found it really hard and the whole class seemed to be staring at me. When I did my speech the second time it wasn’t so bad. I think that I have learnt that once you try something when you are afraid the second time you do it it gets better without you really knowing it.

Museum Trip

On Wednesday all of the senior syndicate went to the Auckland Museum. At the start we had a little struggle to get enough adults to come with us but finally some generous and helpful parents came. We went to the Museum to learn more about our topic Earth Forces because in the Museum there is a volcano gallery. The Volcano gallery was very interesting and here are some things we learnt

*Volcanoes are not always fiery and hot because there are some ice volanoes that don’t blast out boiling hot lava but they shoot out freezing cold snow and icy slush. They are found on the moons of Neptune,Saturn and Jupiter.

*When you hear that a disaster is going to strike you need to know what to do and every family has to be prepared.

We really enjoyed being at the Museum on Wedneday and we learnt a lot of things about our wonderful topic Earth forces.

Production Update

We’ve been practising the songs and all our parts for the senior production of The Blue Crystal which is coming up at the end of term two. Every Friday we have been singing our production songs and several times a week we practise the parts on stage. We are trying hard to do our best for the production but all the practising has only just begun! Lots of people tried out for the main parts but not all of the people got the part they wanted because there are over ninety people in the senior syndicate and we do not have that many main parts. Mostly all of the people got a smaller part on stage. Mrs Pharo, Mr Malcolm, Mr Gordon and Mrs Parker are trying their best to get the production ready in time.

Speeches

Speeches

We were all feeling nervous about sharing our speeches - all except about one or two people in our class who said they were looking forward to it! Some speeches were very funny, there was lots of humour and quite a few of the speeches were personal. They were all very interesting speeches and every one was different. We each had to choose our five top speeches and write them down for the teacher. It was very hard because they were all wonderful. We are all wondering who will be in the top five .......

We really thought everyone had put lots of great effort into finding their information and they all tried hard to not look nervous and also remembered to keep the audience's attention.

Lorna and Sian’s Reflections of our Week

This week and last week we have been practicing for our senior syndicate production, called The Blue Crystal. Some have been practicing for the major roles and some have just found out their minor roles. It’s so hard for us to remember our lines and the songs. Sian is a Scientist and Lorna is an instrumentalist. The major roles have been

working a lot this week. They have been going out in the mornings to run through the whole script. On Sunday July the 3rd will be our Dress Rehersal and the next week we will be performing 4 times. We are looking forward to it.

Cuboro Day

Cuboro

PLOP! went the marble. We were in Rm 5 (the spare room) with a guy called John. We were put into pairs and given some blocks and marbles. Cuburo is a marble course made by blocks which have holes and twists in them. You put the blocks together, depending on how you want the track to go. You need to have an ending and a beginning so you can put the marble in and have the marble coming out somewhere else.

There were different special pieces like a trampoline and a catapult which swings the marbles up four storeys.

I think it would be good for pet mice because there are tunnels and they could chase the marbles. We had great fun and we hope we can do it all again!

Reflection for the week

My reflection for this week was about learning to speak in front of the class. We had to share our heritage with the class. I found it really difficult to do this and I was worried about it. My dad said to take a deep breath before you start. To me it felt like I was speaking to the whole planet! It seems to me that for other people it’s just like drinking water. I think I just have to practice a bit more!

One of the people in my group said I did quite a good job for my speech and that made me feel better.

Our Awesome Friend Jock the Dog!

On Thursday Mr Harper brought Jock in. We, Leiani and Cheralyn, were chosen meet them at the gate. We were waiting for them for quite a while and didn’t know that Jock and Colin were standing right behind us ... until we heard a dog puffing behind us! That was humiliating!!

While we were leading them to the music room, Jock started

to pull at the lead to go a different way because he goes through the

school to visit his girlfriend, Ruby.

When we got to the music room Jock got excited and started to jump up and pull on the lead to go to Leilani. Luckily Leilani

held him still and started to tickle him under the chin and he suddenly stayed calm! When Room 11 got to the music room Jock started getting impatient. When they all sat down Mr Harper started the amazing dog show! The first fact we were told about Jock was that he got ten tennis balls in one morning walk and that was the biggest number he’d ever found!!

Mr Harper showed us how obedient Jock is and he fed him a piece of cheerio sausage.

Deakyn was afraid of dogs because he was attacked by one when he was little!! But when he met Jock he felt confident around him and now he is not afraid of dogs any more!! (Isn’t that neat?)

Next Leilani took Jock outside so Mr Harper could hide a tennis ball.

When Jock came back inside he was told to seek for the ball and guess what? - he found the ball in just 30 seconds.

Here’s our dog safety rap.

by Leilani and Cheralyn.

Always ask the owner if it’s sweet to meet

Let the dog sniff and don’t you go stiff

Don’t show your teeth for the dog to see. Keep them hidden or you MIGHT get bitten

Never look a dog straight in the eyes or you might get a nasty surprise

If you pat dog on its head you may end up in a hospital bed

Its our ....Triathlon!

It was a cloudy Friday afternoon, but that would definitely not stop us from having our annual Sunnybrae triathlon! Once a year in March we hold our triathlon for Year 3 to Year 6 children. Some students work as a team while others compete by themselves. In the triathlon children have a choice of swimming, running, biking or all three! People felt scared, nervous or confident before and after the race. Here are some feelings of people during the triathlon.

*I felt tired when I was running but in the end I felt proud of myself because I cam
e fourth!
Christine

*I felt excited and nervous at the same time.
Cheralyn

*I felt like I was on fire because I was so tired and hot!
Sam

*I felt like my heart was going to jump out and I really wanted to win!
Angus K

*My heart was pounding as I got ready to do my last lap of swimming.
Juwon

*I was proud of myself when I did my bike ride because I tried my hardest!
Molly

*I was scared at the start but when I finished it I felt proud of what I had achieved something new.
Jude

We think everyone who competed in the triathalon should earn a pat on the back because they all tried their hardest and did what they could! It was a very successful afternoon.

Ukelele Group

Many people from our class spend half of their lunchtimes on Monday playing the uke.

The uke is like a mini guitar with four strings.

The ukelele group started last year and is only for Year 6’s. The teachers who take the group are Mrs. Keeley and Mrs.Stewart. We sing and play at the same time. Some of our favourite songs : ‘I’m a Believer’, ‘Ten Guitars’, and ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’. We all have fun in the uke group and are glad that it started. It is now our favourite way to spend Monday lunchtimes.

Jock Dog

JOCK DOG

When we came back from the school holidays there were three ice cream containers full of different coloured tennis balls sitting on the bench. We were all wondering what they were for. It became a Room 11 mystery...

Finally Mrs Parker told us about them and this is what she said. There is a dog named Jock Dog who lives just across the road from Sunnybrae. He found 36 balls and his owner gave them to Mrs Parker who divided them up for us and also for Room 12 and 13.

This is one of our letters to Jock Dog

Dear Jock Dog

WOOF! WOOF! Hi I am from Room 11 at Sunnybrae Normal School. I always wanted a dog like you because I like doing sports like you. I have only a pet cat named Tom.

On the first day of school I wondered about the tennis balls on the bench that had been dyed. Mrs Parker, our teacher kept it a mystery until Friday.

I really want to know the answers to these questions.

What type of dog are you? What happened to the other balls that you collected? How do you know where the sneaky balls are hiding? When did you start to collect balls and what is the number of balls that you’ve collected in your entire life?

Can you please answer them as I am very curious and I want to know more about you. Also did your master (owner) ask you to collect those tennis balls and have you made a collection of them in your house?

Thank you so much for all the tennis balls you and your master (owner) gave to our school. Those balls you gave us are awesome to play with. I wish you could collect more balls for other classes in our school. I think you are a very smart dog and that’s the reason I would like you as my pet dog. You can come and visit our classroom if you wish. I hope you have a happy time with your owner.

Here are some feelings of people before and after their races.......

*I was nervous and scared being called to the finals and it made me have the butterflies but at the end I was proud of myself and what I had achieved. I felt like a lock in me had unlocked and I wasn't afraid anymore!
Jude

*I felt pretty nervous but when I got in the water I felt excited!

Cheralyn's Comic Life

On Thursday Mrs O'Hanlon brought some honeycomb and dead bee larvae into our classroom to show us. She showed us the clever way that bees tesselate the comb in a hexagonal shape. The honeycomb was from a totara tree down on the bottom field. Mr Barnes found it and called someone to come in and kill the bees because they were inside the tree and he couldn't reach them. Mr Barnes was sad because he didn't want to kill the bees but also he didn't want children to get stung because some of the children might be allergic to their stings. Mr Barnes showed us the tree and how he used tongs to get the honeycomb out because the entrance the bees used was so small. Inside the tree the hole was huge. I found the queen bee but I dropped it. It was amazing to see how much honey and honeycomb the bees produced.

Welcome to Room 11 2011

Welcome to 2011 Room 11. We have a background of many different cultures but most of us were born in New Zealand. We are year 5 and 6 and we are looking forward to a great year! Our big topic for the year is Forces Around Us. This term we are looking at social forces.
